[Reporting on Dr. Mozhgan Savabieasfahani’s remarks is excerpted below:]

ANN ARBOR, MI — The coronavirus outbreak and the resulting economic crises were at the top of Ann Arbor voters’ minds during a live-streamed candidate forum for the 4th Ward on Tuesday.

Three Democrats are running for Ann Arbor City Council’s Ward 4 seat in the Aug. 4 primary: incumbent Jack Eaton, former journalist Jen Eyer and environmentalist Mozhgan Savabieasfahani. The winner will represent southwest Ann Arbor…

The coronavirus crisis has highlighted racial and housing disparities in the community, Savabieasfahani said. Affordable housing is not enough to address the affordability issues that plagued Ann Arbor even before the virus outbreak.

“This didn’t happen by accident,” she said. “This is a culmination of decades of laws and public policies that have pushed the most vulnerable to the edges of the safety nets. We have peeled off multiple layers of protection: jobs, better health, better housing. They are deprived of that through the public policies and racist laws that we have.”

She said she supports public housing and encouraging a $15 per hour minimum wage to lift vulnerable populations and help more people to live in the city…

…Savabieasfahani said while the carbon-neutral measures are necessary, they won’t address all the word’s environmental crises because greenhouse gases and other pollutants are deposited into the environment by large organizations such as the U.S. Department of Defense.

“I want us to pay attention to the fact that that will actually be a Band-Aid on a gushing wound,” Savabieasfahani said.

Mozhgan indicates that she's running for City Council on her own dime and therefore has to answer only to her own conscience.

Dr. Mozhgan demands that City Council clean up the expanding dioxane contamination immediately, before it poisons Ann Arbor’s drinking water

Dr. Mozhgan told City Council to put its shovels in the ground now, and clean up the toxic dioxane mess. She reminded the Council that an EPA official just told them that it could take 30 years before a feasibility study could be completed, before EPA could even decide on whether to clean up the dioxane or not. If the City Council succeeds in passing the buck to the EPA, the Council could sit back and vegetate for 30 more years while the Gelman dioxane plume spreads further into our waters. On February 4, 2020, MLive reported on Dr. Mozhgan’s speech to the City Council: “Dioxane is classified by the EPA as likely to be carcinogenic to humans by all routes of exposure. It also can cause kidney and liver damage, and respiratory problems. “Just a few parts per billion in drinking water, with long-term exposure, poses a 1 in 100,000 cancer risk, according to EPA. “Ann Arbor resident Mozhgan Savabieasfahani, an environmental toxicologist who plans to run for council this year, encouraged city officials Monday night to move forward with a city-led cleanup. “For the second meeting in a row, she brought a shovel to illustrate her call for putting shovels in the ground.”

Dr. Mozhgan announces her election campaign

ANN ARBOR, MI — After many years of speaking out before City Council, Mozhgan Savabieasfahani is eyeing a seat at the table.

The Ardmoor Avenue resident publicly announced her campaign this week, vowing to challenge 4th Ward incumbent Jack Eaton in the August 2020 Democratic primary.

An Iran native, Savabieasfahani has regularly demonstrated before council, decrying the killing of Palestinians by the state of Israel and calling on council to pass resolutions to boycott Israel and to call for an end to United States military aid for Israel.

Savabieasfahani, an environmental toxicologist who does grant-funded research internationally, also is frustrated about what she considers a lack of progress on addressing threats to the city’s drinking water supply, including the Gelman dioxane plume and PFAS.

She’s been regularly attending forums and speaking out about those issues…

It’s time to “put the shovel to the ground and clean it up now,” said Savabieasfahani, who wants to put a property tax proposal before voters to fund an aggressive cleanup…
